It was a cool day, one that had the wind whipping at Rogue's two-toned hair and causing the tips of her dark hair to brush against her neck despite the fact that it was pulled back. Her empty and lonely green eyes were focused on the waves crashing against the rocks below as she sat upon a level area of rocks, her booted feet held close to her body. Thoughts drifting, she found herself wondering how things had changed so quickly.

Ah thought it was fah the best, she admitted, but only to herself.

When Rogue had openly supported the Alliance, those in favor of hero registration, she had never fully considered the consequences. But, the moment that most of her friends turned their sights on her with such abysmal expressions, she'd realized her mistake.

In every sense of the word, she had turned against everything that she had stood for beside her friends. The sad part was that she still didn't understand why she felt as though the Alliance was right, except for the fact that she was tired of the fighting and willing to do just about anything to get it to stop. So, she'd joined up with Spider-Man and the few others, hoping to sway the X-Men.

Unfortunately, they had merely been swayed to politely ask her to leave. Although no one had said a word, Rogue had seen the look in their eyes every time she passed one of them in the hall. Eventually, it had become too much for the southern girl and she had packed a small bag before literally flying off of the Mansion grounds, not knowing if she'd ever return.

Thankfully, Moira offered her a place, temporarily. Which is why Rogue merely sat there looking at the waves crashing against the rocks below, wondering how in a world that was filled with so many people in the same sort of situation... she was still alone?

Ray flew telekinetically across the ocean with almost ridiculous ease. There was a time that when she flew she had manipulated the "Phoenix effect" so whenever she flew about , her body would be enveloped entirely in flame with fiery wings to boot.

Nowadays, she was much more careful with such flagrant displays of her powers. With the recent ugly political climate the world was undergoing, it pays to be prudent and stay below the radar of the government lapdogs.

Still it galled Ray's conscience that the same nonsense that infested her own alternate time line was happening here and she felt quite powerless to stop it. Her recent battle with the Goblyn Queen was left unresolved, hopefully forever, but it left Ray with more questions.

About her place in this world which she decided to fly over to Muir Island to catch her breath and think things through until she knew what she wanted to do with her life.

But as she landed on the rocky shore, Rachel meet someone she had never thought she would meet again after her betrayal was known.

"YOU! You traitor! What are you doing here? Looking for more defenseless mutants to sell out? Or you just hunting humans who are sympathetic to us now?" Ray barked at Rogue.

The wind seemed to shift as a figure landed nearby, instantly drawing Rogue out of her quiet reverie. Instant shock filled her, and she had to remind herself that this wasn't Jean. Jean was gone.

The words, much to her surprise, hurt her more than she had expected. Venom was evident, and hatred seemed to waft off of the figure in thick waves. In just four sentences, a former friend had summed up the dreary situation that Rogue had condemned herself to.

Rising into the air so that she hovered just inches off of the rocky ground, Rogue stared down at Rachel Summers and wondered if the girl had sought her out and had simply been acting, or if Rogue's appearance had been a genuine surprise. But, if the fury in Rachel's stance was any indication, she did not want to find out.

"Ah ain't no traitor!" Anger bubbled to the surface as Rogue clenched her gloved hands at her sides. "Ah'm just lookin' fah a quiet place, Rachel. Ain't no need t' get all riled up." But, even as she said the words, she knew that they were not true. She had betrayed her friends, even if she had never given away any of their identities. She had sighted with the Alliance, and that had been her own personal death sentence.

"Ain't no one helpless if they just admit th' truth," she admitted begrudgingly. "Yah of all people should know that."

For a minute or two, Ray locked eyes with Rogue. The temptation to send the Southerner hurling toward space using her powers was a strong one but she found that she could not do it.

Ray calmed down a little after what Rogue had said. And she agreed with her at least in part. She did know what it was like being both the hunter and the hunted. In her own alternate timeline, Ray was a "Hound", a mutant specialized to track down and sometimes kill other mutants. It was done against her will of course but it was by no means an excuse to justify what she did nor did she want to simply forget such horrors.

"Yeah, i do know about what you are talking about, but still it does not mean that it is right." Ray said sardonically as she sat down the grassy ground. She watched a flock of seagulls in the distance as they dove into the water for fish. God, what she would not give to fly about free without a care in the world...

Ray shook her head rigorously as she got back on track.

"Sooner or later, when every mutant or metahuman is locked in cages, who do you think the governments would turn on next?" she tried to reason with Rogue. "Those who herded people like us as if we were cattle that's who. Did it ever cross your mind that they aren't going to let you run free just because you agreed to the Alliance?"

Ray stopped talking just then. She did not come here to Muir Island to reopen old wounds though Rogue's presence did just that.

Like her, Ray was looking for a quiet place too.

Did the girl honestly think that Rogue hadn't been stricken by those same exact thoughts hundreds of times since she had joined the Alliance? Did Rachel honestly think that Rogue believed that she was saved from any sort of persecution merely because she had sided with the government?

"Ah know what yah tryin' tah say, Rachel, but it ain't lahke that." The government wanted to protect people, why would they turn against her? "All they want is tah make sure that people are safe. So yah have tah give up yah name? If it means peace in th' end, then even Ah'm willin' tah give that bit of information up. Yah should know how much that means tah meh, Rachel. Yah should know."

"Right now Ah'm in the best position tah make sure that people are safe, that things are goin' smooth and all. Yer on th' run, lookin' over yah shoulder all the time." Granted, Rogue couldn't exactly go out in public without being ashamed or humiliated by the people from her past. "The Alliance is just what its namesake says, yah know. They support us and we support them."

Pausing, Rogue lowered herself so that her booted feet touched upon the ground. Her thoughts were whirling, and she hated that her solitude had been interrupted so that she could be challenged by someone that she truly cared about. It wasn't as if Rogue had her doubts about her choices, but they were hers to live with. The Alliance promised peace across the country.

Who could want more?

"Ah'm sorry, Rachel. Ah never met tah hurt no one."

Ray sighed inwardly. Why bother with explaining things if no one wants to listen?

Rogue would have to figure things out herself. Ray hoped the eventual truth was not too devastating. As for being on the run and looking over her shoulders (a ridiculous motion for a telepath), it was nothing new in what has been happening to her life but if that is the case then she wouldn't have it any other way.

Rachel Grey will never become a government tool ever again.

"I suppose you feel strongly about this. While you never meant to hurt anyone, nevertheless you did. What hurts the most is everyone is excepted to be a good soldier and not complain" Ray acknowledged coolly but not coldly. She was tired of making judgments. "Society sets a thin line between what's normal, accepted behavior and those that makes some one a pariah."

Ray continued to look over the ocean in silence, taking in the cool salty air.

"Do you want me to leave?" Ray asked Rogue abruptly, still not looking at her.
