Jo laughed. "A leaf blower...or a tiny black hole that only sucks up dust." It felt strange to be talking and laughing with Darkl, as though they were both normal. She wondered how long this could last. I've never had a partnership or joined a group that lasted for more than a few months. I've become so used to being on the run that I can't seem to get used to being settled down. She chewed on the inside of her cheek as she wondered if she could actually stay here.

OOC: Yeah, I've been having a little trouble coming up with stuff to put down. If only more people actually got on this! Where'd everyone go? (Rhetorical question. You don't have to answer.)

CLARKIE IS COMING BACK!!! OMG!!! *Super hyper, happy dance* Peoples are coming back! And I'm too excited to write. So it's really short.

Darkl chuckled. They certainly had a lot of work ahead of them. He sighed and left the room, going back to his own dust storm of a room, ready to clean!

I suggest a time lapse to when the whole house is clean or whatever. Like, its been a week or something, the house is clean, new clothes, food is in the fridge and everything is good. For now.

OOC: Time lapse magic! *waves banana*

Jo opened her eyes and stretched. For about a week she had been happy in the morning because she had known where she was going to wake up and that she would be able to fall asleep in the same place that night. She got out of bed, pulled some clothes from her closet, and got dressed. I wonder if we have any apples, she thought as she left her room and headed to the kitchen.

There were apples in the fridge, and she pulled one out along with some eggs and the milk. She found the cinnamon she had bought a few days ago and searched the kitchen for flour and other ingredients. Just before she started to make the batter, she remembered to get a pan and turn on the stove.

"I hope I haven't forgotten how to make these," she muttered, mixing things together. She poured some of the batter into the pan and added apple chunks and cinnamon. "I guess not." The smell filling the kitchen was just like she had remembered from her childhood. If Darkl's not awake by now, she thought, this should probably get him up.

Darkl stared at his bedroom ceiling. He wondered when he had fallen asleep. He usually never slept at night, preferring to sleep either in the middle of the day when his powers were weakest or in space where it was quiet and relaxing. He sat up, rolling his shoulders, and realized some smell was drifting through the house. It smelled like cinnamon, and apples?

Darkl got out of bed, throwing on a red shirt and blue jeans and made his way downstairs. He was a little surprised to see Jo in the kitchen, cooking. "You know," he started, "I usually don't like human food but this smells amazing." He hated the greasy smell that came with most food nowadays. He mostly munched on fruits, like apples or oranges. He also noticed that the bowl of apples that usually sat on the counter was empty and made a mental note to get more.

"I didn't know who could cook," Darkl commented. Then again, he didn't know a lot about the girl he had rescued. Even though they had been in the house for a week, they didn't talk about much, not even going near the subject of their pasts. All Darkl knew was what Jo had told him before. But, he figured Jo knew even less about him.

"Thanks," Jo said, and started flipping the pancakes. "It was my dad's recipe. My mom didn't cook much, and when she did, it was usually something out of a box or a can. I hated the taste of instant mashed potatoes, so I started memorizing everything my dad made. Most of it's desserts, though." She laughed. Wow. I think that's the most I've said to him in one sitting. I'll have to remember today. Write the date on my wall or something. 'On this day I said a mouthful to Darkl and brought up my past.'

"Most people are surprised when they find out I can cook," she said. "I usually come across as a sci-fi geek or a tomboy. I freaked a bunch of people out when I came to school wearing a skirt." Well, there we go. More conversation, and more about my past. I guess I'm getting a little more comfortable around him.

Darkl smiled. He had thought of Jo as a tomboyish girl when he had first met her. He also realized that she seemed much more comfortable than she was a week ago. "My father was the terrible cook in my family. You will not believe the things he tried! And the amazing thing was that my mother let him," he said, remembering when he was younger, being in his father's kitchen, watching him throw a multitude of random things together.

"Though, my mother was a rather good cook. Unfortuantly, I never learned how to cook," Darkl added. He glanced at Jo out of the corner of his eye. "By the way," he started, "how are your wings?" he asked. He knew that a week ago they were badly hurt and hadn't thought to ask her about it until now.

Jo let her wings slip through the slits in her shirt. "They're feeling a lot better," she said, and began stacking the pancakes on a plate. "I think I might try flying a bit later. I heard there was supposed to be a thunderstorm this afternoon, so I might go out then." Flying through lightening, letting the wild winds carry me away... it's something I haven't done for too long.

"People always assumed I was a terrible cook because I'd just make a sandwich out of whatever was lying in the house. But is peanut butter and candy corn really that bad of a combination? I thought it was great." She put some more batter in the pan and started looking through the fridge. "Do you like butter with your pancakes?"

Darkl raised an eyebrow. Flying through a thunderstorm? He had never tried that. He had always flown at night, usually on clear nights when he could see the moon. He might have to try a thunderstorm though. "Butter is fine," he answered, automatically turning to get a plate out of the cabinet.

Darkl lifted a plate out and he held the plate in front of him, about to place it on the counter when a thought struck him. For once, in the many years he had lived on Earth, he was happy. During the years he had gone on as a villain, sure he acted fine and dandy, but he was always gloomy. He had never really enjoyed Earth, thinking it was just a boring place most of the time. But now, not acting as a villain and just as a almost regular person, he felt fine. A small smile came to his face.

Ooc: Yeah for the plate thing, just say that Jo only had one plate. I just wanna have Darkl doing something when he freezes and realizes that. :P

Jo pulled the butter out of the fridge and moved two pancakes onto Darkl's plate. He seemed lost in thought, and she decided not to interrupt him. I'll let him find his own way out, she thought, and checked the new batch of pancakes. They didn't seem quite finished, so she spread some butter on one of her pancakes and started eating.

She wondered what Darkl was thinking about, and then remembered suddenly how the neighbors had looked at them while they were doing some work on the house. One of them -- she couldn't remember which -- had looked pointedly at her left hand as though to ask why she didn't have a ring. Part of her had wanted to tell them that nothing was going on between her and Darkl. The other part had just wanted to laugh maniacally.

Darkl unfroze from his place by the counter. He realized that Jo was already eating and sighed as he thought of how he had zoned out. He was known for dazing off and completly missing something. Once, when he was young, he and his sister had been playing and he had dazed off and missed a ten minute meteor shower.

Darkl looked down and saw pancakes on his plate and just shook his head at himself. His eyes looked to the wall quickly, to look at the calendar to see the date. Something in the corner of the square caught his eye. He cussed a few times in his mind. It was a lunar eclipse that night. He grew incredibly weak on lunar eclipses because the moon was at its fullest but still completly dark. Darkl's powers were drawn from the moon's light and had grown used to the waxing and waning of the moon, as had he. But lunar eclipses threw everything off. He glared briefly at the calendar, as if it was the paper's fault before sighing. It was going to be a long day.

Yeah, no idea what they could do. Job hunt, stop a bank robbery if they go to town, idk.

Jo finished her pancakes and started washing off her plate. She glanced at Darkl, who was glaring at the calendar, and asked, "Something wrong?" I've got my first job interview today, but I doubt it's that. There's nothing else written up there. Maybe he's just glaring into space, and the calendar got in the way.

She glanced at the clock and jumped when she saw that it was eight-thirty. "I've got to go," she said, folding her wings back beneath her shirt. "The interview's at nine-thirty, so I'll probably be back by eleven. Don't blow the house up." She half ran to the door, slipped her feet into her shoes, and hurried down the sidewalk.

I'm going to be late. Oh, what a start to the job hunt.

Darkl blinked as Jo quickly explained she was leaving and walked out the door. He ignored the comment about blowing the house up and, turning his glare away from the calender, sighed and finished the food Jo had made him. It was very good and he wondered if he could convince the girl to make breakfast everyday.

Darkl sat for a few minutes in the quiet house, not sure what to do. They didn't have a TV or computer, though he was perfectly fine without either of the two. He could go on the roof for the next two hours, it was nine by then, and just hang around. But Darkl knew that in the morning sun, he wouldn't be able to stay on the roof for long. He sighed.

Maybe I could get a job, like Jo, Darkl thought. He blinked a few times. That sounded like a reasonable thing to do. But, the jobs that the humans did meant he had to get an education or some proof that he knew something. He sighed. He had taken school on his planet and had learned how to read and write in English when he had arrive on the planet. And, he certainly wasn't going to go to one of the human schools.

Darkl huffed, got up, washed his plate, went upstairs to grab his wallet and keys, and left the house, locking it behind him. He didn't know how long he would be gone and was now happy that he had given Jo a copy of the house key. He walked down the street, hands in his pockets, trying to think of what to do.

Jo tapped her foot as she waited for the bus to arrive. Damn things are never on time, she thought, and wished she had a watch. When one did arrive, she managed to scramble through the flood of people trying to get on and found a spot. She had to stand, but at least she wouldn't be any later than she already was.

The streets of Boston flew by outside the window she was watching. Jo wondered if she should keep an eye on them and make sure she didn't get lost if she happened to miss a bus, but decided that she could just fly if that happened. People have to get used to the fact that mutants exist, she rationalized. We can't coddle them and their ignorance forever.

She was one of the few people who got off at the third stop, about a quarter mile from the theater where she hoped to work. She sprinted to the doors, slipped inside and found the manager's office. "My name's Jo Cipher," she said. "I'm here for a job interview."

The manager nodded. "Take a seat in the hall. I'll be with you in a few minutes." Jo found a bench and began making sure her hair didn't look too messy. Good impressions, a voice chided inside her.

Darkl sighed. He was leaning against a wall, watching people walk by. Some cast a look at him, but then looked away, busy with their own lifes to wonder how him. He was bored. He didn't know what to do. Last time he had been in the town, well, he had been a criminal and he didn't get bored easily as long as there was a store, bank, or museum to be stolen from. But now, after he had practically turned hero and given up on the criminal life, he had nothing to do.

It didn't help that he was across the street from a bank. Darkl was looking at people when one man caught his eye. The man was looking over his shoulder, like he was being followed, and had a hand in his coat. He looked rather nervous. Darkl sighed and moved across the street. The man entered the bank as Darkl reached the sidewalk. He ran into the bank after the man.

Gunshots echoed through the bank as the man fired the gun upwards. "Alright! This is a bank robbery!" he yelled. Darkl could see the man shaking and felt that his heart was beating fast. He rolled his eyes and sighed. Amaturs. "Everyone, down on the ground!" the man shouted, pointing the gun at people.

"I wouldn't point that people if I were you," Darkl said, his hands in his pockets, a calm look on his face. The man spun around and pointed the gun at Darkl. "Who the hell are you?!" the man yelled, finger on the trigger.

"Put the gun man. You're shaking in your shoes," Darkl pointed out. The man didn't change his stance, and if anything, got shakier. Darkl made sure to not be on his heels, incase the man shot. As long as he was ready for it, he could dodge the bullet.

"Miss Cipher?" Jo rose and entered the office. "Pleasure to meet you," the man said, shaking her hand. "Please, have a seat." She sat in the remaining chair, which looked like it had survived World War II and felt like it would shatter beneath her. "Now, it says here that you have experience working in movie theaters before?"

"Yes, sir," she replied, nodding once. "I had a summer job in one." The man nodded and looked at her resume again. Jo tried to keep her fingers from tapping against her thigh. I have to stay in control, she thought. Oh, this is going to take forever.

---
When the interview was over, Jo walked out of the theater and let out a long breath. She felt utterly drained and foolish. Come on. A theater job is for teenagers! He'll probably pass you up for a kid that always has gum in his mouth and a cell phone in his hand. She stuck her hands in her pockets and walked slowly down the street. She decided against taking the bus, thinking she would rather wander for a bit. She heard a siren in the distance, and smirked.

"I really am feeling down," she muttered. "Normally, I'd be flying over there as soon as I heard it." She sighed. "Well, even superheroes need a day off."
